Night time is the time many of the main resorts come alive, once the dark of the night sets in and the neon signs spring to life, so does Koh Samui.
As you walk along the main street in Koh Samui, you will be greeted by the many PR’s for the local Koh Samui Restaurants who will try and entice you into their premises for a meal or a drink, unlike so many other places I have visited around the world, in Koh Samui, a polite ‘no thank-you’ will suffice and you will be left alone.
There are many bars and nightclubs within Koh Samui, they cater for every need and taste, ranging from the Go-Go Bars (where the beautiful Thai girls will entertain you as you drink a Tiger beer or two) to the many themed bars, as always, the ubiquitous Irish Pub is evident in most of the towns throughout Koh Samui. Possibly one of the most famous of these Irish bars is the very lively Tropical Murphy’s Bar in Chaweng where they have a resident band who play every evening and also have guest bands who appear from time to time. I must admit, it was rather strange sat in an Irish themed bar, drinking Guinness and watching a live Thai band singing ‘Guns and Roses – Living on a Prayer’, a night I will not forget in a long time, it was superb.
Once the bars shut, usually around 12pm, the many nightclubs and show bars come into their own, again many are themed and you will find spectacular shows that include the Thai Ladyboys that were stand on the street corners earlier dressed in the most stunning sequinned cocktail dresses, beautifully made up, giving out leaflets offering free entry or discounted drinks at their respective bars. You really should take in one of these shows whilst in Koh Samui, they are again, very entertaining and are professional standard productions.
You can (if you so desire) dance the night away in the many nightclubs which often go on into the very early (or if your prefer late) hours of the morning, it seems that as one shuts, another opens up so the party keeps rolling particularly in Chaweng where its not unusual to see revellers coming in from a night out as you are going down for your breakfast.
It would be remiss of me not to mention in an article about Koh Samui Nighlife, the many Go-Go bars and clubs that you can find in Koh Samui and the more risqué Thai Massage parlours that open during the nightime. Koh Samui, like the rest of Thailand has a very relaxed attitude towards sex, in many bars you will find girls who work for the bar owners and who get paid by you buying them drinks, its not uncommon to be approached by these girls and for you to be offered ‘services’ outside of the bar or if you are having a massage in a massage parlour to be offered a ‘happy ending’, this is after all Thailand.
