Being a tropical island, Koh Samui has miles of stunning golden sandy beaches that are easily accessible from the main ‘ring road’ that circumnavigates the island.
Amongst the main tourist beaches are:
Chaweng
This is the main tourist area with the longest beach in Koh Samui and a road full of shops, restaurants, bars and hotels that stretches for over 5km. The beach here is always busy but being so long you will always be able to find a quite area.
Big Buddha Beach
This is situated in the very far north of Koh Samui and is probably the nearest major beach to the airport and is where you can catch the ferry to the neighbouring islands of Koh Pha Ngan (for the full moon parties) and Koh Tao (for the diving) as well as ferry connections to the mainland for those who are travelling on a budget.
Bophut
Often known as the Fisherman’s Village, Bophut is a tranquil area where the authentic Koh Samui village has been preserved and consists of a single street where traditional shops and houses have been sympathetically transformed into restaurants, guest houses and shops.
Lamai
Considered to be Koh Sami’s second beach (behind Chaweng), Lamai is less crowded than Chaweng and has some stunning Granite boulders which sit in the sand towards the southern end of the bay. This area is famed for its Spa’s and Health Reorts.
Mae Nam
This horse shoe shaped bay offers spectacular views of neighbouring Koh Pha Nang and unlike many of the other beaches on Koh Samui, Mae Nam has seen many residential developments as opposed to touristic development and has a community consisting mainly of Ex Pats residents and long term tourists.
Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam
Here you will find a series of bays that overlook the Angthong Marine Park, this area is well worth visiting to watch the most spectacular sunsets on Koh Samui, watching the sun dip into the sea here on an evening before going to one of the quality Fish Restaurants has to be a must do on anyones Koh Samui holiday.
